Why share your plans?
As a local authority, sharing information on your decarbonisation plans allows us to factor them into our future network investment.
This enables us to better support your long term net zero strategy.
Whether you are in early stages of decarbonisation planning or have a full Local Area Energy Plan, you can share your information with us to help us shape our forecasts.
These forecasts, the Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) are published annually and provide a view of the energy system’s potential pathways to 2050.
How does sharing plans help me?
Collaboration between UK Power Networks and local authorities is key to planning the future capacity of the electricity network.
Your plans will shape our network investment decisions by enhancing the DFES, which will help determine expected electrical demand increases, as published in our Network Headroom Report. Our Distribution Network Options Assessment then helps decide where, when, and how to intervene in the network.
How does sharing plans help UK Power Networks?
Sharing helps us:
- Understand the impact your plan might have on the network
- Assess whether the needs of your plan’s align with our existing forecasts.
- Determine if additional assessment of the plan is required for us to amend our forecasts and future network investment

When should I share information about my plans?
There's never a bad time to share your plans.
Regardless of when we receive the information, we can use it to inform this year's or next year's forecasts.
How do I share my plans with UK Power Networks?
We provide six simple ways to share which support different stages of your planning activities. Find out which best matches your plans below.
I have a specific policy direction to share
- Use the DFES Self Selector to choose a forecast scenario which most closely aligns with your ambitions.
- Alternatively, Your Decarbonisation Story shows our understanding of your Net Zero plans which you can review and update.
I have one or more technology forecasts to share
- Use the DFES widget to share your forecasts across one or several technologies at a time.
- Or if you’re undertaking more detailed local forecasts (perhaps as part of a LAEP), you can use the Data Dictionary to share the details with us.
I want to provide updates to my Net Zero targets or ambitions
- Use Your Decarbonisation Story to review our understanding of your plans and forecasts, and easily provide feedback and updates.
- Alternatively, if you have specific targets for one or more technologies, you can share them via the DFES widget.
I have a specific project I want to share
- If you’re working on a specific local project, you can use the Projects feature in our free LAEP+ Planning Tool.
- The tool will let you model and assess the project on a visual map, then share the details directly with us.
I have detailed local forecasts I want to share (as might be found in a LAEP)
- If you have a Local Area Energy Plan or similar set of forecasts, you can use our Data Dictionary to share detailed forecast information with us.
- Alternatively, if you’re using our free LAEP+ Planning Tool, you can use the Scenarios feature to forecast different technologies in your area, then share the results with us.
