What is the Energy Toolkit?

UK Power Networks Distribution System Operator (DSO) and UK100 have partnered to deliver a toolkit that provides local authorities practical steps towards energy transition. The toolkit covers how to:

  • Respond to the government’s plans to decarbonise the energy system and deliver economic growth
  • Find opportunities in renewable energy and explore new income sources
  • Develop decarbonisation pathways to enable more clean energy in your area, such as Local Area Energy Plans (LAEPs)
Download the Energy Toolkit

The Energy Toolkit is available as the complete guide or as a quick reference summary, both in PDF format

Why is the Energy Toolkit important?

The UK has set a legally binding target to reach net zero by 2050, with ambitions to meet 100% of electricity demand with clean energy by 2030.This energy transition requires new ways of thinking, collaboration and adaptation to changing technological and social factors. The toolkit aims to support local authorities in meeting these new challenges and opportunities.

How can the Energy Toolkit help me?

Understand the energy system and how it is evolving

The energy system is shifting to clean energy, with more local generation and a more dynamic model of operation. The toolkit will get you up to speed on these changes and what they mean for you.

Provide ways you can shape the energy system and meet your Net Zero targets

There are key step and actions that you can take to drive the energy transition, which can include:

  • Development of a Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP)
  • Facilitation of electric vehicle transition
  • Decarbonising your own energy usage
  • Engaging with energy flexibility and storage
  • Improving building energy efficiency
  • Supporting communities and business with the energy transition

The toolkit will show you how you can take these actions to shape the energy system and achieve your Net Zero targets.

Explain the key role of Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs)

Understand how:

  • The DNO can help you on your ready-to-launch projects to connect EV charge points, new business and green energy to the network efficiently
  • The DSO can provide you strategic support for long term projects, advising on the most cost-efficient solutions for your needs

The toolkit will show you how you can effectively partner with your DSO, making the best use of the support they provide.

Find support from other stakeholders

Learn how other stakeholders, apart from your electricity network operators, can support you with your Net Zero ambitions. The toolkit shows the benefits of engaging with Community Energy Organisations, Net Zero Hubs and Regional Energy Strategic Planners (RESPs) to support local decarbonisation.

Show how you can finance your local energy plans

The toolkit explains some of the options available to help you finance the energy transition. This covers consideration of new approaches, focusing on project development, and reducing risks attached to private and public investments.
